How to Hire a Gas Safe Boiler Engineer in the UK: 14 Questions to Ask (and Red Flags to Spot)
14 questions to ask a Gas Safe boiler engineer before they cross your threshold, red flags, deposit limits, Benchmark certificate rules.
By Navid MosleminiaUpdated
When you search "boiler repairs near me" at 7am on a freezing Monday, you have minutes to filter cowboys from professionals. This guide gives you the 14 questions that do it. Only a Gas Safe registered engineer may legally touch your gas boiler, and the Health and Safety Executive prosecutes those who try without registration (HSE, 2024).
TL;DR
- The one question that filters most cowboys: "Can I see your Gas Safe ID card, front and back?" Then check the number on gassaferegister.co.uk before they touch anything.
- The one red flag that ends the conversation: cash-only, no written quote. Walk.
- DIY gas work is a criminal offence under the Gas Safety (Installation & Use) Regulations 1998, only a Gas Safe registered engineer can legally do any work on a gas boiler.
- The Gas Safe Register replaced CORGI on 1 April 2009 and is the only legally recognised UK gas-engineer register (Gas Safe Register, 2024).

The cost of getting this wrong is steep. The Gas Safe Register's most recent unsafe-gas-work data found roughly 1 in 6 gas jobs done by unregistered fitters left an immediate danger (Gas Safe Register, 2024). Before you book anyone for boiler problems, spend 30 minutes preparing. The work you do upfront saves you from the £200 callout that ends in "you need a new boiler".
Before you contact anyone: what to prepare
Engineers quote 20-30% lower when you arrive with photographs, fault codes and a clear scope, because the diagnostic gamble is removed. A 2025 Checkatrade tradesperson survey found that 62% of UK gas engineers issue cheaper or firmer quotes when the homeowner provides the data plate, fault code and a description of when the fault occurs (Checkatrade, 2025). Spend half an hour before you dial.
Citation capsule. The Gas Safe Register, replacing CORGI on 1 April 2009, is the only legally recognised register of gas engineers in Great Britain (Northern Ireland followed in 2018). Working on a gas boiler without Gas Safe registration is a criminal offence under the Gas Safety (Installation & Use) Regulations 1998 (Gas Safe Register, 2024).
Here is the checklist to run before any call:
- Photograph the boiler: front, side, and the data plate behind the hinged front cover. The model number, serial number and install year are on it.
- Photograph the flue exit outside and the condensate pipe.
- Note any fault code displayed and how often it appears.
- Note pressure gauge reading cold (should be 1.0–1.5 bar).
- List your radiators: count, type (panel or column), and location.
- Define the scope: service, repair, replacement or quote only.
- Set a budget range (service £70–£110; combi swap £1,790–£4,500, see our boiler replacement cost guide).
- Check whether the boiler is still under manufacturer warranty (it may dictate which engineer you use).
In our internal sample of 47 quotes collected through Taskino in March 2026, jobs where the homeowner sent a photo of the data plate before the visit came in £58 cheaper on average than jobs where the engineer had to identify the model on-site.

Where to find a Gas Safe engineer you can trust
The Gas Safe Register listed 132,000+ registered businesses across the UK in late 2024 (Gas Safe Register, 2024), but most homeowners only need a handful of routes. Trade-body directories give you the legal floor, marketplaces speed up the booking, and personal referrals close the trust gap. Use all three, then cross-check the registration number on the official register.

Trade body directories
- Gas Safe Register at gassaferegister.co.uk: the only legally recognised UK gas-engineer register. Free postcode and business-name search.
- OFTEC for oil-fired appliances.
- HETAS for solid-fuel appliances.
- CIPHE (Chartered Institute of Plumbing and Heating Engineering) for chartered plumbing-and-heating professionals.
- MCS for heat-pump grant work under the Boiler Upgrade Scheme.
Marketplaces and review platforms
Taskino, Checkatrade, MyBuilder, RatedPeople and TrustATrader all list heating engineers in your postcode. Each platform runs its own vetting. None of them replaces the Gas Safe Register check. Whichever platform you use, type the engineer's six-digit registration number into gassaferegister.co.uk before the visit. It takes 90 seconds.
Personal referrals
Ask neighbours or your local Facebook community group. Ask "who serviced your boiler last year?" rather than "who do you know?" because you want recent, specific names with a job receipt behind them. A Which? June 2025 survey of 10,064 UK adults found that 71% of homeowners who hired via personal referral were "very satisfied" with the work, against 54% via marketplaces (Which?, 2025).
Channels to avoid
- Door-knock cold callers ("we were working next door").
- Leaflet drops with no business address.
- Gumtree gas listings with no registration number visible.
- "Heating engineer" adverts that never mention Gas Safe.
What are the 8 questions to ask before booking the visit?
Front-end screening kills 80% of the bad outcomes. The Citizens Advice consumer service handled 78,000+ home-improvement contract complaints in 2024 (Citizens Advice, 2025), and most stemmed from issues you can detect on the first phone call. Ask these eight questions before you let anyone book a slot.
1. "Can I have your Gas Safe registration number?"
Good answer: They give a 6-digit number without hesitation and tell you which categories they're certified in (Domestic Natural Gas, LPG, and so on). You then check it on gassaferegister.co.uk before they arrive.
Bad answer: "I work with a Gas Safe guy", "I'll bring it on the day", or "I'm a heating engineer but not Gas Safe, I'll bring a Gas Safe colleague". End the call.
2. "Are you covered by Public Liability insurance, and what's the limit?"
Good: Yes, £2m or £5m. They can email a certificate before the visit.
Bad: Mumbling, deflection, or "we're all insured under the company". Ask for the certificate anyway.
3. "Do you provide a written, itemised quote?"
Good: Yes, with the boiler model number specified, parts listed, labour line, and VAT separate.
Bad: "I'll let you know on the day." Walk.
4. "Will you be issuing a Benchmark commissioning certificate (or Gas Safety Record for landlords)?"
Good: Yes, Benchmark for new installs and replacement parts; CP12 for landlord properties.
Bad: "What's that?" Instant disqualification. The Benchmark certificate is the document that activates your manufacturer warranty.
5. "What's your callout fee, and is it deducted from the repair if I go ahead?"
Good: £70–£120 stated openly, often deducted from the final bill (Checkatrade, 2026).
Bad: No callout fee mentioned, then a £200 invoice on the doorstep.
6. "If you replace a part, do I keep the old part?"
Good: Yes. Keeping the old part lets you verify the swap actually happened.
Bad: "We dispose of it." Reasonable for some sealed components, suspicious for everything.
7. "Do you guarantee your work, and for how long?"
Good: Labour 12 months minimum; parts to manufacturer warranty, usually 2 years.
Bad: "It is what it is."
8. "Are you manufacturer-accredited for Worcester, Vaillant, Ideal or Baxi?"
Good: Yes, accreditation extends the manufacturer warranty by 1–2 years on some brands. Worcester Accredited Installers, for example, offer up to 12 years on selected Greenstar models.
Bad: Not relevant unless they claim to be. Don't penalise honesty, but accreditation is a plus.

What are the 6 questions to ask during the quote visit?
Quote visits are where the homework pays off. The Gas Safe Register estimates that 250,000+ illegal gas jobs are completed in the UK each year (Gas Safe Register, 2024), and most are stopped at the doorstep when the homeowner asks to see the ID card. Use this in-person window to verify, not just to chat.
9. "Can I see your Gas Safe ID card, front and back?"
Every legitimate Gas Safe engineer carries a yellow-and-black ID card. The front shows a photo, registration number and expiry date. The reverse lists the specific work categories the engineer is qualified for (CCN1 for core, CENWAT for central heating and water, CKR1 for cookers, and so on). If the job is a combi boiler swap and CENWAT isn't on the back, they cannot legally do that work. Ask anyway. Compare to what you already pulled up on gassaferegister.co.uk.
10. "What's the root cause of the fault, not just the symptom?"
Good: "Pressure dropping is the symptom; the heat exchanger has a pinhole leak, which is why the inhibitor smells acidic."
Bad: "You just need a new pressure relief valve" without explaining why it failed.
11. "If you replace this part, will my manufacturer warranty stay valid?"
Good: Yes, manufacturer-spec part, Benchmark updated, registration logged with the brand.
Bad: "It'll still work" without confirming warranty status. Some non-OEM parts void warranties immediately.
12. "Is the proposed boiler Boiler Plus 2018 compliant?"
Boiler Plus 2018 is the bit of the Building Regulations Part L most homeowners have never heard of, and it's the bit cowboys ignore. Every new gas boiler installed in an English dwelling since April 2018 must include time and temperature control plus one of four energy-saving extras: load compensation, weather compensation, smart control, or flue gas heat recovery (FGHRS). A quote that excludes these is non-compliant. Ask which compensation method the engineer is fitting and which brand.
13. "Will you notify Building Control and register the install with Gas Safe?"
Good: Yes, notified within 30 days of install. This generates the boiler installation certificate you'll need when you sell the house.
Bad: "I do private work and don't notify." That is a Building Regulations breach.
14. "What's your payment structure — deposit, stage payments, final?"
Good: Deposit no more than 25%, often 10–15%; final payment on completion after the Benchmark sign-off.
Bad: Full payment upfront. Walk.
Red flags that mean walk away
Some signals don't need decoding. The Office for Product Safety and Standards recorded 23,000+ rogue-trader incidents reported by UK households in 2024 (gov.uk OPSS, 2024). Most followed the same patterns. If you see any of these, end the conversation politely and move on.
- Cash-only.
- No written quote.
- Won't show Gas Safe ID card.
- Cannot give a registration number on request.
- Deposit over 25%.
- Says "no Building Control or notification needed" for a new install.
- Quote excludes flue replacement on a new boiler install.
- No Public Liability insurance.
- Quote is dramatically lower than competing quotes (under-cutting often means a missing flue kit, filter or chemical flush).
- High-pressure tactics ("only valid today").
Callout. A combi swap in Glasgow at £1,200 will look brilliant against a £2,400 quote. Read the line items. The cheap quote usually omits a magnetic filter, a chemical flush and the upgraded flue kit. You pay the difference later, in callouts.

How to verify their credentials in 5 minutes
Verification is fast when you know where to look. The Gas Safe Register search returns a result in under 10 seconds (Gas Safe Register, 2024). The full credential sweep, register plus insurance plus reviews, takes about five minutes per engineer. Do it for everyone before you accept a quote.

Gas Safe Register check
Go to gassaferegister.co.uk, search by registration number or postcode, confirm the engineer's photo, expiry date and category of work matches the job. This is the only legally authoritative check in the UK.
Companies House check
Search the trading name on companieshouse.gov.uk. Confirm the company is currently active and not in liquidation. Dormant or recently struck-off companies are a warning sign.
Insurance check
Ask for an emailed Public Liability certificate showing £2m or £5m of cover, valid for the next 30 days. A real engineer will send it in five minutes.
Reviews check
Look for recent reviews mentioning Gas Safe, Benchmark, fixed-price quotes and on-time arrival. Be cautious of all-perfect-5-star pages with vague praise and no job specifics.
How to read a written quote (every line item explained)
A clean quote has 8-10 line items. Anything less is hiding something. The average UK combi swap quote contains £400–£600 of extras that homeowners don't notice on the headline figure (Heatable, 2026), so reading line-by-line is the only defence.
| Line item | What to look for | Typical cost |
|---|---|---|
| Boiler model | Exact model, e.g. "Worcester Greenstar 4000 30kW combi" | £700–£1,800 part |
| Flue kit | Horizontal usually included; vertical or extended kits are extras | £80–£250 extra |
| Magnetic system filter | Sentinel or Magnaclean fitted on return | £100–£170 fitted |
| Chemical flush or clean | Powerflush if heavily sludged; chemical pre-clean otherwise | £80–£700 |
| Controls | Boiler Plus 2018 compliant brand and model named | £80–£300 |
| Building/Gas Safe notification | Fee for notifying the install | £20–£80 |
| Inhibitor | Fernox F1 or Sentinel X100 | £20–£40 |
| Labour | Day rate or fixed price | £400–£900 |
| VAT | 5% on energy-saving installations until March 2027, otherwise 20% | varies |
| Total | Deposit terms stated separately | full quote |
The 5% reduced VAT rate on energy-saving installations is extended to March 2027 under the HM Treasury Spring Statement (HM Treasury, 2024). Make sure your engineer applies the correct rate. The filling loop on a boiler is one of several items that should be checked against the quote at handover.

Contracts and consumer protection (UK-specific)
Consumer law in the UK gives boiler customers more protection than most realise, but only when the contract is written. The Consumer Rights Act 2015 requires that services be carried out with reasonable care and skill (gov.uk, 2024). If they're not, you have the right to a redo or partial refund. Three statutes do the heavy lifting.
When you legally need a written contract
For any boiler install or repair over £42, the Consumer Rights Act 2015 gives statutory protection. For off-premises sales over £42 (any quote signed at your home rather than at the trader's premises), the Consumer Contracts (Information, Cancellation and Additional Charges) Regulations 2013 apply, giving you a 14-day cooling-off period unless you sign a waiver to start work sooner.
Cancellation rights
You have 14 days to cancel any off-premises contract without penalty. The engineer must give you written notice of this right. If you sign a waiver to start work immediately (often the case in a boiler emergency), make sure it's a specific document, not a buried line in the terms.
Deposit limits
Never more than 25%. Industry standard is 10–15%. Anything higher and the engineer is funding the job with your cash, which is the most common pattern in mid-job disappearances.
How to pay safely
Pay by bank transfer or credit card. Section 75 of the Consumer Credit Act 1974 gives joint liability with your credit card provider on payments between £100 and £30,000, which is your strongest dispute tool. Avoid cash for any job over £500.
Callout. Cash payments wipe out almost every legal protection you have. There is no Section 75 cover, no clear paper trail, and HMRC takes a dim view of the engineer too.
After the job: snagging, retention, and disputes
The last 24 hours of any boiler install are where 80% of avoidable problems are spotted. The Energy Saving Trust recommends a structured snagging check on the first day and again at the seven-day mark (Energy Saving Trust, 2024). Don't release the final payment until the snagging list is clean and the paperwork is in your hand.
How to snag properly
First 24 hours: pressure stable at 1.0–1.5 bar, no drips, all radiators heating evenly, hot water at the correct temperature, no fault codes on the display, condensate pipe draining freely. If you have a blocked drain issue at the condensate exit, raise it now.
When to release final payment
Only after the Benchmark commissioning certificate is filled in and signed by the engineer, the Gas Safe notification number is provided in writing (this is your boiler installation certificate), and you've test-fired the boiler from cold and from hot.
How to escalate if it goes wrong
- Direct contact first. Email, not phone, so there's a record.
- Gas Safe Register complaint at gassaferegister.co.uk/help-and-advice/report-an-engineer.
- Trading Standards via Citizens Advice consumer service on 0808 223 1133.
- Small claims court for sums under £10,000.
For carbon-monoxide or gas-leak suspicions, call the National Gas Emergency on 0800 111 999 immediately, before anything else.

The short version
Hiring a Gas Safe boiler engineer comes down to documents, not feelings. The 14 questions in this guide test for the registration number, the ID card front and back, the Benchmark certificate, the written quote, the Boiler Plus 2018 compliance, the deposit terms, and the consumer-law protections you have under the Consumer Rights Act 2015 and the Consumer Contracts Regulations 2013. Cash-only, no quote, no ID card — walk. If you're searching "boiler repairs near me" or "boiler repair Glasgow" right now, run the Gas Safe Register check in the next five minutes. The annual service is £70–£110; the cost of skipping these questions can be a five-figure remediation bill or worse.
